Precautions That are Essential

Pregnancy is a phase when having a healthy diet is more important than ever. It is very important to pay close attention to what you should consume and what you should avoid.

There are some very essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that your baby needs. A lot of food and beverages are safe but there are some you must avoid to ensure that you and your baby are safe and healthy.

  • Fish that contains mercury –

Shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel are high in mercury; this mercury converts into methylmercury in human body which may cause delay in the development of the baby’s brain.

  • Deli meats –

Also known as ready-to-eat meats, these contain listeria bacteria which moves from the mother’s body to the placenta inside causing serious injuries and sometimes foetal deaths.

  • Unpasteurized milk –

It accounts for greater proportion of food borne diseases and does not have any nutritional advantage. It contains bacteria like E. Coli, salmonella, listeria and cryptosporidium which can be dangerous for you and the baby inside.

  • Certain vegetables and fruits –

Papaya – leads to uterine contraction.

Pineapple – softens the cervix resulting in early labour.

Black grapes – builds extra heat in the body.

Eggplant – stimulates menses which may lead to abortion

Lettuce and Cabbage – May carry food borne diseases.

  • Excess caffeine –

Over consumption of caffeine may increase the chances of miscarriage and low birth weight babies. Limit your caffeine intake to 200mg a day. Caffeine may also cause premature birth and withdrawal symptoms in infants.

  • Canned food –

The lining of food cans contain a toxic substance called Bisphenol A also known as BPA which causes fertility problems, liver ailments, cancer and heart diseases in pregnant women.
