Use These Tips to Optimize Your Sleep

If you are feeling sleep-deprived for the first few months after giving birth, you are not alone. All around the world, moms (and dads!) suffer an erratic sleep schedule to tend to their baby.

However, too little sleep is not at all advisable. It can leave you feeling lethargic and cranky the next day or worse, cause a car accident if you fall asleep at the wheel.

There are a few things you can do to ensure that you get as much of sweet slumber as possible:

Simply Lie Down: Even if you find it difficult to take a nap during the day, just lie down on a couch for half an hour. Just resting your body for a while can be very restorative.

Ditch the Devices: If you find it hard to go to sleep even after a tiring day, your smartphone could be the culprit. Artificial light from your devices can stimulate your brain when it is time to sleep.

Keep away your smartphone and laptop an hour before sleep-time. Listen to music or read a book before sleeping.

Limit the Coffee: While a shot of espresso can be a great way to jolt yourself out of sleep in the morning, too much caffeine can mask your need for sleep. It can even prevent you from sleeping when you actually need to sleep.

Limit yourself to one cup a day.

Enlist Help: Ask your husband, caretaker or visiting relative to work the night shift occasionally. It is easier when you are bottle-feeding, but you can also pump out some milk to store if you are breastfeeding.

If the baby wakes up in the middle of the night, you can get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep this way.
